What is EQ on a mixer?

  1. Your incoming track is beatmatched and on the phrase, but you've already lowered its low EQ before bringing it into the mix — it enters with no bass.
  2. You raise its volume: the incoming track's vocals, mids and highs blend with the outgoing one, with no bass conflict.
  3. At the right moment (often the first beat of a phrase), you swap the bass: the outgoing low EQ down, the incoming low EQ up, in one move.
  4. You finish the transition: the outgoing track leaves, the incoming one stays, alone, with its bass.

One bassline plays at any instant. The mix stays clean, and the floor never feels the drop-off.

Why it's the most underrated technique

Because it's invisible. A scratch is seen, an effect is heard, a big drop is felt — the bass swap only gets noticed by its absence. As a result, beginners skip it to learn what impresses, then wonder why their mixes sound "less pro" than others without being able to point to the difference. The difference is right there, in the bass.

It's also the best effort-to-payoff technique in the craft: a few hours of practice, and your whole mix levels up — without adding a single effect.
